Empathy is the capacity to understand or feel what another person is experiencing from within their frame of reference, that is, the capacity to place oneself in another’s position.
It can be said as “stepping into someone else shoe”.
There are many definitions for it that encompass a broad range of emotional states. Types of empathy include cognitive, emotional , and somatic empathy.
Emotional Empathy | Affective Empathy is the capacity to respond with an appropriate emotion to another’s mental states.
Cognitive (means brain and it’s connections) emotion is the capacity to understand another’s perspective or mental state.
Affective and cognitive empathy are also independent from one another; someone who strongly empathises emotionally is not necessarily good in understanding another’s perspective.
Somatic empathy (soma means body) is is a physical reaction, probably based on mirror neuron responses, in the somatic nervous system.
An increasing number of studies in animal behaviour and neuroscience claim that it is not restricted to humans, and is in fact as old as the mammals, or perhaps older.
Example such as dolphins saving humans from drowning or from shark attacks.
